BIO

Olaoluwatoyosi Phillips is a producer, writer and TV personality. She produced and hosted “The Gist with Toyosi Phillips”, an entertainment show on Sahara TV for two seasons and co-hosted a weekly show on Sahara FM radio from 2014 to 2015. She’s a contributor at bellanaija.com (one of Africa’s leading inspiring and informative entertainment portals) with articles aimed at encouraging people to live the best life they can. A life coach in the making, her life mantra is, “All things are possible to those who believe”.

EARLY LIFE & CAREER

Toyosi Phillips was born in the mid 80s in Lagos, Nigeria. She attended Corona Nursery and Primary School, Victoria Island, Lagos; Queens College (Secondary School) Yaba, Lagos; Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, graduating with a 2:1 in Economics before obtaining a Masters degree in Economic Development and Policy Analysis at the University of Nottingham, England in 2011.

 

She showed great interest in the arts while growing up, playing the role of Annie in Corona school’s stage production of Annie and was the president and vice-president of the Drama and Dance-Drama clubs respectively at Queen’s College. At Bowen University, she MC-ed at several award show ceremonies and represented the department of Economics on the final year committee.

 

After moving back to Nigeria in 2011, she worked for one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks as an Internal Auditor. 2 years later, acknowledging that her passion lay in the arts, she moved to New York City and obtained a diploma in Broadcast Journalism from the New York Film Academy. While at NYFA, Phillips covered several events including the city’s reaction to the United Nations Annual General Meeting, the Chabad’s Children of Chernobyl Annual Gala and the New York City Bring Back Our Girls’ Protest.

 

Shortly after graduation, The Gist with Toyosi Phillips talk show was launched. It ran for two seasons with a total of 34 episodes. She returned to the New York Film Academy in 2015, graduating in 2016, this time leaving with a diploma in Producing. She moved back to Nigeria shortly after graduation and worked as Production Manager on Ndani TV’s multi-million Naira project, Gidi Up and has produced several documentaries and talk shows under her production company Butterfly productions.

 

Phillips has had several stints at acting; playing the role of Irene, a spoilt Nigerian senator’s daughter living in New York in the web series, Assorted Meat and also playing a minor role in Never Far Away; a short film written, produced and directed by her.

 

She has also made several TV and radio show appearances including Ndani TV’s Real Talk, Spice TV’s Spice Most and Silverbird Radio’s Sundays with Omalicha and has also been featured in different publications including Blanck magazine, I Want Her Job and Diaspora Quarterly.

 

She’s a member of the New York Women in Film and TV Association and the National Association of Black Journalists. She is an ardent advocate for Sickle Cell awareness and is a supporter of the National Blood Transfusion Service (Nigeria) and the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. She set up the Taiwo Olawale Phillips (T.O.P) Sickle Cell Endowment Fund in 2016 and has supported and continues to support organizations that cater to people living with Sickle Cell Anemia.
